Are you the parent of a picky eater? You are not alone! Many parents struggle with picky eating and it can present a very complicated situation. In some cases, the support of a specialist may even be needed. However, you can take certain steps to help improve your child’s eating habits.
Set an example
The best way to encourage your child to eat well is to do so yourself. A child with healthy role models is far more likely to develop healthy habits. Be sure to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, organic meats, poultry, and fish in order to encourage your child to do the same.
Create healthy family habits
Include your child in the dinner preparation. Many children love to help cook and it is a great way to spend quality time with them. By giving your child this responsibility, they will feel important and more connected to the food.
Also, make eating dinner together a priority. Sitting down to eat creates mindful eating. When children appreciate what they are eating, they are often more likely to be open to different foods.
Limit snacking, limit picky eating
Many parents offer their children far too many snacks. If a busy schedule creates a long gap in between meals, then it is appropriate to have a healthy snack. But after a balanced and nutritious meal, your child should not need to eat until their next meal. This will allow the child to become hungry enough to finish their food.
Offer healthy foods
Try to only offer healthy foods. Although it is inevitable that your child will be exposed to processed and unhealthy foods at times, only offering wholesome choices at home will build a foundation for healthy habits.
It is very common for children to be picky eaters. However, with consistently smarter choices, you can instill healthy habits in your child. Stay informed on other nutritional tips by browsing some previous blogs!
