What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, is the most common hormonal issue amongst women of a reproductive age.  Typical symptoms of PCOS include acne, abnormal hair growth, abnormal menstrual cycles and cysts on the ovaries.

Hidden Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

While Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is fairly common, many women go undiagnosed for some time due to experiencing a lack of symptoms. This is referred to as “hidden” PCOS.  Certain lab tests show hidden PCOS by measuring the ratios of two hormones produced by the brain, the Lutenizing Hormone (LH) and the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). These hormonal imbalances can lead to estrogen, testosterone and progesterone issues. There are many other contributing factors to PCOS and its symptoms, particularly environmental exposures.

Women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome often find it difficult to conceive, so they are sometimes put on medications such as Metformin or Clomiphene. While these medications can be helpful, they deliver varying results and don’t always fix the underlying problems. Diet, on the other hand, is the most important and often overlooked treatment for PCOS.

Dietary Remedies

A main symptom of PCOS is a sensitivity to insulin. This sensitivity is partially genetic and partially dietary, meaning it can be naturally treated as well. Insulin has a direct effect on the ovaries and can increase hormone dysregulation.  One of the best natural remedies is to get the blood sugar under control by reducing carbohydrates in the diet. These dietary changes often need to be permanent in women with PCOS, as they have a genetic predisposition for this to be a recurring problem.  Talk to a nutritionist or Naturopathic Doctor to learn how to make the necessary dietary changes that are right for you.
