Limbic Dysfunction

Grace came to me with multiple food and chemical sensitivities.

Her symptoms began after a series of stressful events over six months, including starting a demanding full-time job and several bouts of food poisoning, which left her gut feeling unhealed.

She also developed sensitivity to cleaning products.

Exposure to these triggers caused fatigue, migraines, stomach aches, nasal congestion, watery eyes, dizziness, and acid reflux, often lasting 1-2 days. She reacted similarly to high-histamine foods and sugary foods, experiencing bloating, abdominal pain, and excessive belching. Stress and anxiety worsened her symptoms.

I explained to Grace that while we explore the root causes, it’s crucial to address her limbic system.

The limbic system, a part of the brain, processes information from the body and determines our responses to perceived threats. When it malfunctions, it can exaggerate or misinterpret threats, keeping the mind in survival mode. This can be triggered by trauma, toxic exposures, infections, medication reactions, or chronic stress.

Over time, the brain learns to adapt to these perceived threats, creating new neural networks. These networks can become stronger with repeated fear or anxiety.

Fortunately, the brain’s ability to adapt, known as neuroplasticity, allows us to unlearn these patterns.

With commitment and effort, it’s possible to achieve complete recovery without medication. I liken it to a workout program for building a six-pack—you need to train your brain just like your muscles. Consistent daily practice is key, and while results vary, many see improvement within days or months. I ask my patients to commit to six months of training, during which ups and downs are expected, but overall progress is made.

I often recommend Annie Hopper’s Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS) or Ashok Gupta’s Brain Retraining program. Both programs focus on similar concepts but differ in approach. Some people resonate with one more than the other, and it’s okay to try both before settling on one.

Grace chose DNRS and noticed significant improvements within a month. After four months, she was minimally reactive to cleaning products and could tolerate more foods. She’s thrilled to be reclaiming her life.
