I recently met Emma, a vibrant 7-year-old who had been struggling with chronic ear infections for years. Her parents were constantly worried about her missing school due to pain and discomfort and the frequent antibiotics she was taking. But after implementing some lifestyle changes we discussed, Emma has been free of ear infections for six months now!
Here’s how you can support your child’s ear health effectively.
Ear infections are quite common in children and often start with a cold or flu.
While some clear up on their own, others may require antibiotics. Children are more prone to these infections because their immune systems and ear canals are still developing, and they are often exposed to germs at school and daycare.
Our main goals are to reduce how often ear infections occur and minimize symptoms when they do. From a naturopathic perspective, this means boosting the immune system and reducing mucus in the body.
Nutrition is key.
Dairy and refined sugars can increase mucus production, so it’s helpful to limit these in your child’s diet. Instead, focus on fresh, whole foods that bolster the immune system.
Colorful fruits and vegetables, like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, avocados and blueberries, are rich in vitamins and minerals. Mushrooms like shiitake and maitake offer compounds that support immunity and can be easily added to meals. For infants, breastfeeding provides essential nutrients, probiotics, and antibodies that help fight infections.
Gut health is also crucial for immune function.
The microbiome, a collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the gut, plays a vital role in immunity. Supporting it with foods high in soluble fiber, like beans, lentils, chickpeas, and ground flaxseed, helps maintain gut health.
Live culture foods like sauerkraut, non-dairy yogurt and kefir support microbiome diversity. Depending on digestive symptoms, running GI focused testing with your health care provider, like a stool culture, could provide insight on microbiome imbalances and need for supplemental probiotics.
Antimicrobial herbs can be very useful for treating ear infections.
Depending on severity, certain herbal liquid formulations may be applied to the ear canal to combat viruses or bacteria. However, these shouldn’t be self prescribed. It is always important to consult a licensed healthcare provider to ensure the right treatment, especially if there’s a concern about a ruptured eardrum.
Preventing ear infections by supporting the immune system is the best way to reduce their frequency and severity in children. With these strategies, you can help your child maintain better ear health and enjoy more active, healthy days.
