What is Perimenopause?

What is Perimenopause?

I often speak with patients who are puzzled by the term “perimenopause.” Is it synonymous with menopause? Are their periods going to end abruptly?

Navigating the path of perimenopause can be challenging, but gaining a clear understanding is the first step toward effective management. Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause.

Unlike menopause, which officially begins after a full year without menstruation, perimenopause can commence as early as your late 30s and extend into your early 50s, with menopause typically occurring around the age of 51 or 52.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause refers to the period when your body starts showing signs of hormonal fluctuations as you approach menopause. These changes can vary widely and are characterized by irregularities rather than a complete cessation of periods.

Common Symptoms of Perimenopause:

Many women experience a range of symptoms during perimenopause, including:

  • Feeling “not like myself,” with increased irritability, anxiety, or depression
  • Mood swings
  • Irregular periods
  • Increased fatigue and reduced resilience to stress
  • Changes in libido
  • Trouble sleeping

So, what can we do about this hormonal dance?

Lots.  Here are some of the integrative strategies your naturopathic doctor might discuss with you:

  • Acupuncture: Can be beneficial for reducing some symptoms.
  • Herbal Remedies: Using herbs to enhance sleep quality.
  • Nutritional Support: Addressing any deficiencies that may exacerbate symptoms.
  • Overall Hormonal Balance: Checking hormones, including cortisol and thyroid levels, can help tailor treatments.
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy: is a consideration, depending on your personal and family history and the severity of your symptoms.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating regular exercise, healthy eating, and stress management techniques can improve overall well-being.

You don’t have to continue feeling “not like yourself”!

I often tell my patients that navigating menopause is like a dance; what we start with may not be what we end with, as we must adapt to hormonal changes along the way.

Take this opportunity to establish habits that will help you during this transition:

  • Balanced Diet: Focus on meals rich in protein, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Sleep Hygiene: Work on maintaining a regular sleep schedule and put the electronics away at least an hour before bedtime!
  • Stress Reduction: It a big request for most of us, but including stress-relieving activities every day, even simple ones like a 5 minute meditation break or taking a short walk outside can go a long way!
  • Physical Activity: Get in regular movement!  Regular exercise, even a daily walk, can boost mood and energy levels.  If this is hard for you, take a small step forward and build up.

Remember, every woman’s experience with perimenopause is unique.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consult a healthcare provider skilled in integrative and naturopathic approaches for personalized advice. If you’re already on the right track, contact your provider, get your labs done, and discuss your strategy for navigating this transitional period. By proactively addressing these changes, you can ensure a smoother transition to menopause and enhance your quality of life!
