Do you ever feel like your emotions take a drastic turn in the weeks before your period?
Recently I met with my patient Elizabeth, a 32-year-old marketing professional. She thrives at work and enjoys her time with friends and family. But like clockwork, about 7-10 days before her period, everything changes.
She feels overwhelmed by irritability, sudden bursts of anger, and waves of sadness so intense that she struggles to get through the day. Even small tasks feel impossible, and her relationships suffer as a result.
For Elizabeth, the joyful, confident woman she knows herself to be seems to disappear, replaced by someone she doesn’t recognize. This is the reality of living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a severe form of premenstrual symptoms that goes far beyond typical PMS.
Many women experience significant physical, mental, and emotional changes leading up to their period.
When symptoms such as breast tenderness, headaches, bloating, and irritability are mild, they fall under the category of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However, when these symptoms become severe enough to disrupt daily life, they are classified as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
Symptoms of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Symptoms of PMDD can include:
- extreme mood swings
- depression
- anxiety
- and a sense of losing control
Women like Elizabeth may find that for 1-2 weeks of every month, their work, relationships, and overall well-being are significantly impacted.
Treatment of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Often, conventional treatments like birth control or antidepressants are recommended, but these medications don’t work for everyone. Fortunately, there are natural and holistic approaches to treating PMDD, focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, herbs, and nutrients that support hormone balance and mood.
Let’s take a closer look at some effective options:
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is essential for mood support and hormone balance. It helps the body metabolize estrogen, creating a healthier balance between estrogen and progesterone, which is central to managing PMDD. B6 also supports serotonin production, a key brain chemical that regulates mood.
Magnesium
Magnesium is a calming mineral that can ease anxiety and mood swings. It plays a role in hormone metabolism and improves the body’s stress response, which positively impacts both mood and hormones.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and incredibly beneficial for mood regulation, including the emotional symptoms of PMDD.
Vitex (Chasteberry)
Vitex is a hormone-balancing herb that can alleviate both the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS and PMDD. It’s a versatile, natural option for many hormone-related conditions.
Progesterone
Progesterone, a hormone often out of balance in PMDD, can be supported through natural methods or, in some cases, with bioidentical progesterone therapy. Hormone testing can help determine when this option is appropriate.
In addition to these specific treatments, addressing overall nutrition, lifestyle habits, and gut health is essential for a comprehensive approach to PMDD.
If you’re struggling with severe premenstrual symptoms, know that you’re not alone, and there are effective options to regain balance and feel like yourself again. With the right support, it’s possible to live a happier, healthier life—even during those challenging premenstrual days.
